Action 2017

«One country is one book»

History of the action

The idea of the Kazakhstan project "One country is one book" is based on the well-known in the US library projects "One Book, One Chicago" and "If the Entire Seattle Will Read One Book", when the whole city reads the same literary work in one and the same time.

The idea of a citywide reading holiday dedicated to one book was proposed by the Seattle Public Library Public Book Center, a major city in the northwest of the US, in the state of Washington. The purpose of the action, first held in 1998 under the motto: "If the whole Seattle reads one book," was the propaganda of reading and strengthening of civil unity of the people of Seattle.Later similar events were held in a number of other cities - Chicago, Buffalo, Rochester.

The program One Book, One Chicago was initiated by the Chicago Public Library with the active assistance of the Chicago municipality. Its main goal was to stimulate the interest of the adult population of the city and the youth in simultaneous reading and collective discussion of the same book in families and at work, with friends and acquaintances, in libraries, educational institutions, bookstores, religious organizations, cafes and Other public places. On this day the city turns into a kind of club of book lovers.

In October 2000, Chicago hosted the first city festival "Book Week in Chicago: The City of Lovers", which included presentations of books with public discussions and speeches by the authors, as well as seminars, excursions and other events.During the 7 weeks of the campaign, tens of thousands of Chicago residents read and discussed the novel of the American writer Harper Lee (born in 1926), awarded the Pulitzer Prize, "To Kill a Mockingbird" (1960).The book raises important problems of racism and tolerance that are relevant to modern Chicago and the world.

At present, the idea of the "one country - one book" project has become widespread in many countries of the world (Spain, Latin America, Korea, etc.). In particular, the 80th anniversary of Gabriel Garcia Marquez, author of the novel "One Hundred Years of Solitude", was Devoted to marathon reading in Spain. The novel was read aloud for several days by volunteers. The beginning of this marathon was put by the deputy chairman of the Spanish government Maria Teresa Fernandez de la Vega. Each participant was given 15 minutes, for which he had to voice 7 pages of the novel, which was published exactly 40 years ago.

In Korea in 2003. To the joint reading, mostly children's books were selected. This project later developed into the project "One Library - One Book" and "One Village - One Book".

"A great reader's adventure" is experienced every year by residents of the south-west of England. Between January and March of each year, the entire population of this region reads the same book.In 2006 they read the book by Jules Verne "Around the World in 80 Days".

The action "One country is one book" in Kazakhstan

Since 2007, this action is being conducted in our country, thanks to the efforts of the National Academic Library of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The task of the action is to popularize Kazakh literature, increase public interest in reading, develop a research interest in studying the literary heritage of Kazakhstan, and promote the intellectual and spiritual development of the younger generation.
